Liberation of Kuwait
Kuwait was liberated from Iraqi occupation on February 28, 1991, after a U.S.-led coalition defeated Iraq in the Gulf War. The liberation was the result of a major ground offensive that followed a successful air campaign. Invasion of Kuwait
- In 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait under Saddam Hussein's leadership.
- The invasion was met with widespread international condemnation.
- The United Nations Security Council imposed sanctions on Iraq.
Gulf War
- The war was divided into phases, including Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.
- The coalition launched a major ground offensive into Kuwait on February 24, 1991.
- The coalition liberated Kuwait and advanced into Iraq.
- The coalition declared a ceasefire after 100 hours of ground combat.
Liberation of Kuwait
- The coalition expelled Iraqi forces from Kuwait.
- The coalition found that most of the 500,000 Iraqi troops surrendered.
- However, there were pockets of resistance in some parts of the country.
- The coalition advanced into Iraq, where the majority of the fighting occurred.
